Valuing your Education

I am a college student. I graduated from my class top 5. I was in national honor society, involved in clubs, and sports. Now from reading this you would think that I am an exceptionally talented student at University of Houston. Well you're wrong. When starting here I was ahead of the game I was exempt from taking english 1303 due to my score ont he AP test. As a result i was able to be placed in English 1304. That was in the fall of 09, we are now in the fall of 10. If you do the math right I am taking this course for the 3rd time. It all went down hill as soon as I started college and I am close to being kicked out. When i heard this news from my advisor it was a reality check slapping me in the face. Now I am determined to not just pass but to be the best like i used to be. It's not just me who is facing this problem before my eyes, I know there are other college and even high students throwing away their education and not giving a care. I believe education is what is going to help our future. Sometimes an individual has to set their problems to the side or whatever it is they are going through and take it out on books and knowledge. Be enthusiastic at what is your learning because knowledge is power. Today it is hard to get a good job with out a high school diploma and especially impossible to get a career. So yeah you canwaste time fooling around and having your fun but when that is all said and done what is there to fall back on? I ended up falling behind and now here I am trying to catch up or atleast boost up my gpa so I can have a good academic standing.

Global Warming

World on Fire

What is bothering the fellow houstonians today is the extreme heat! Igo outside in the morning already with a break of prespiration coming down my face. Did you know it gets hotter and hotter every year? It has been proven that as our population is getting bigger we are using more of ther resources available to us. With this being said i think it't time to step up and take initiative for solving the problems of global warming. there are more cars on the road and more building are being built as a result more freeways are occupying the space with new technological innovations. However one positive outcome in houston that is a work in progress is the metro light rail. With this being done to improve our transportation that is less cars on the road. However this is just a tiny step toward recovering from the heat waves endangering our globe. The reas0n why most of us have not taken steps now is because we are lazy. I mean who wants to wake up early to catch the bus or recycle everything when you can use your car that's in your parking garage or just throw away your trash at the next available trash can even then sometimes just litter on the street. I strongly believe if the problem hit us right in the face is then when we will do something about our problem. It may look like now that our ice caps are melting in the distance but this turmoil can reach close home sooner than you think.

Don't Ask Don't Tell

An army of One

One of the problems that is facing the military is the Don't Ask Don't tell policy. It explains that if you are homosexual or bisexual you are not allowed to serve in the military base. The individuals who interview the incoming army men ask them a series of personal questions which strictly violates the firs and fith amendment of the constitution; freedom of speech. However it is now being declared as unconstitutional to ban the indivduals who are gay from joining the military. Obama states the don't ask don't tell policy "weakens the national security". I think this is a good policy not to repeal because it is not morally right to prohibit someone from serving their country. Judgment and criticism play a major role in this predicament. Banning a certain individual will probably cause set backs such as intelligence that could be used to stop a huge problem facing the military but the military is not allowing someone who is gay from joining the military just because of their sexual orientation. When you think about it, when it comes down to war and serving your country, your fellow army man is not thinking about if the man next to him is gay. All they want to do is fight for their nation. It is a controversial uprising though because others may not be for it. In the end however we have to think about what is good for out nation and how it will effect our future. Maybe the next person someone leaves out could be the next individual who could effect our future of tomorow.

Michelle Flores Video Games

One of the topics we discussed in class today was video games. In my opinion i think video games are a psychological addiction because individuals are into the new technological innovations that are being updated almost as fast as we can blink our eyes, from cell phones to music and even that HD telvision. Gamers find it hard to resist in my opinion to pass up the new games that are coming out with the new and eye catching features. So yes games are like an addiction but it can be stopped at some point. It is up to the individual themseleves to quit and do something more productive with their everyday life. As for me im not addicted to video games, however i do find it hard to resist facebook. I check it everday. Alothough i do not find it "addicting", I know when enough is enough and therefore those gamers out there have the choice to stop or not.
